For me, it started with intelligent conversation. Twenty years ago when I met Janice, I was impressed by her clarity of thought, what she knew and more importantly . . . what she wasn’t afraid to say. We were introduced over lunch and in less than an hour, I knew she was someone I wanted for a colleague. As we worked together (in business & community service), I realized I wanted to be her friend, too.
Although we no longer work for the same employer or community service organization, we’ve kept in touch over the years. Each time we connect, we have the best time talking about ourselves, our community, and our convictions.
We talk with each other as though we were made at the same time or raised up in the same household. Our ideals for ourselves and our visions for what the world could be are, for me, both practical and profound. And still . . . we laugh as much as we debate. Are our views identical? Heck no. That would take all the fun and learning out of our time together.
After each refreshing breakfast, lunch or dinner, we always say the same thing:
“Wow. We should have tapped that.”
Then one day, we decided to do exactly that. We’re hoping that maybe we can be inspirations to someone else the same way we are inspirations to each other.
